How Long Can You Keep a Skip?
Skip hire periods vary and depend on the job type. Understanding how long you can keep a skip — and what happens if you need more time — helps you plan your project and avoid unexpected charges. Tell us how long you expect to need the skip when requesting a quote.
Typical hire periods
There is no single standard hire period. Common arrangements range from a few days to two weeks, with flexibility for longer projects where needed. The hire period is usually agreed at the time of booking and may be reflected in the price. Confirm how long you expect to need the skip when requesting a quote.
Short projects
A few days may be enough for a quick clear-out or renovation where waste is ready to load.
Standard hire
A week to two weeks is common for most domestic and trade projects.
Extended hire
Longer periods may be available by arrangement, often at an additional cost.
Weekend use
Some providers allow skips to be kept over a weekend, which can be useful for domestic projects. Confirm whether weekend days count towards your hire period.
Collection booking
Collection is usually arranged in advance. Let us know when the skip is ready for collection, or book a collection date at the time of hire. Make sure the skip is accessible for collection.
Permit expiry
If the skip is on a public road, the permit may have a time limit. The skip must be collected before the permit expires, or the permit may need to be renewed.
Additional charges
Keeping a skip beyond the agreed hire period may incur additional charges. We will confirm extension costs before the hire period ends. Tell us if you need more time.
Exchanging a full skip
If the skip fills up before your project is finished, an exchange (swapping a full skip for an empty one) may be possible. This is usually arranged separately from the original hire.
Booking ahead
During busy periods — particularly spring and summer in Torbay — availability may be limited. Booking ahead helps ensure the skip is delivered and collected when you need it.
